The City of Indianapolis Office of Sustainability has achieved a goal outlined in the city’s sustainability and resilience action plan, Thrive Indianapolis. The goal involved expanding partnerships with sustainability-related businesses and organizations to offer green job opportunities to Indianapolis youth through Project Indy. Green jobs, which produce goods or services benefitting the environment, have grown from 189 in 2019 to an estimated 654 in 2023. The initiative aligns with International Youth Day’s theme, “Green Skills For Youth: Towards a Sustainable World.” Local employers like Indy Parks, TeenWorks, and Indianapolis Zoo have listed youth green job opportunities on Project Indy.
‘Green jobs are those that produce goods or provide services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources. The number of green jobs for youth in Indy has grown from the 2019 baseline of 189 to 522 in 2022 and an estimated 654 for 2023. “People may not immediately understand the connection between our local economy and the climate crisis, but the reality is the two are closely intertwined.” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “As our society moves quickly toward electrification and a stronger defense of natural resources, we need a workforce that is equipped with the necessary technical knowledge and skills — and that starts with young people.”‘
