Indianapolis International Airport Pioneers Use of Carbon Capture for Runway Project

The Indianapolis International Airport, home to a significant FedEx operation and 8 million passengers annually, embarked on a three-phase, $190 million runway and taxiway reconstruction project. The aim was to replace aging infrastructure and enhance sustainability. The project, completed in phases, used a full-depth concrete reconstruction with recycled stone and asphalt layers. The Indianapolis International Airport partnered with Circle City Aviation Partners to identify sustainability opportunities, including carbon capture technology, resulting in the airport receiving an Envision Platinum Award for sustainability and resiliency. Their initiative paves the way for carbon-neutral airfield projects. It incorporates several environmentally friendly strategies, such as recycling existing concrete, using non-potable water, upgrading to LED lighting, and more.

“Engineering students from Purdue University, members of the American Concrete Pavement Association and several community organizations have spent time at the airport learning about the value this runway and taxiway project will bring to the region. The Indianapolis Airport Authority is also proud of the participation by more than 30 local subcontractors. It is slated to spend approximately $38.6 million with 34 diverse businesses during phases one and two, and anticipates more diverse business participation as Phase Three proceeds in 2024.”

Community outreach and engagement were integral to the airfield improvement project at Indianapolis International Airport. The project is estimated to create over 3,200 jobs. As a gesture of goodwill to the community, a local artist was commissioned to create a 14,000-square-foot mural on the fence surrounding the project site, enhancing the visual appeal and demonstrating consideration for neighbors and passersby. The project’s success demonstrates the benefits of intentional collaboration and community involvement for future endeavors.
