The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has revealed the designations for the 2023 Round 7 Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFC). This includes designations for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging in 11 states, including Indiana. Greater Indiana has been collaborating with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), the Office of Energy Development, and numerous metropolitan planning organizations to support the proposal designating most interstates in Indiana as alternative fuel corridors through the FHWA’s AFC program. These designations have helped to guide the Infrastructure Deployment Plan under the federal government’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) funding opportunity.
Hydrogen corridors were designated in 13 states, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in one state, and Propane in one state. These designations expand coverage of alternative fuels across the United States, supporting the installation of infrastructure for EV charging, hydrogen, propane, and natural gas fueling along major national highways. The AFC designations play a crucial role in funding provisions under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, specifically supporting programs like the NEVI Program and the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant Program. The FHWA updates and redesignates the corridors annually to adapt to evolving vehicle technology, increased market adoption, and the installation of alternative fuel infrastructure.
