The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that Indiana is set to receive funding through the EPA’s first Clean School Bus (CSB) Program Grants Competition. First Student Inc. has been selected for a $39,499,635 grant to purchase 100 clean school buses across multiple states, including Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. This funding, part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, aims to accelerate the transition to low- and zero-emission vehicles, benefiting air quality for children and families while contributing to environmental justice and economic growth.
The EPA’s CSB Program, created under President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, includes both a grant and rebate program. The grant program awards funds to selected applicants for purchasing clean buses, while the rebate program allows recipients to receive awards before purchasing eligible buses. The recent grants mark this program’s second round of selections, with more funds anticipated for additional rounds. The program, which addresses air pollution from older diesel engines, is linked to asthma and other health conditions affecting students, particularly in communities of color and Tribal communities.
The CSB Program reduces greenhouse gas emissions, saves school districts money, and fosters cleaner air. The recently announced grants, totaling approximately $965 million, reflect the high demand and response from applicants seeking to purchase electric and low-emission school buses. Prioritizing school districts in low-income, rural, and Tribal communities, the program aligns with President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative, aiming to deliver 40% of benefits to disadvantaged communities.
The EPA is currently accepting applications for the 2023 CSB Rebate Program until January 31, 2024. The team at Greater Indiana is ready to offer assistance to support school districts seeking funding through the CSB Program. We are available for grant writing support and can provide letters of commitment to strengthen applications, ensuring they meet the January 31, 2024 deadline. This collaborative effort aims to empower school districts, facilitating their participation in the program and maximizing the benefits of transitioning to electric and low-emission school buses.
