“As many of you know, Hydrogen Day is October 8 each year. Why? Because the date 10/08 shares the same sequence of numbers as the atomic weight of hydrogen: 1.008. This year, since October 8 falls on a Sunday, we’re celebrating hydrogen for an entire week, from today through October 11. Hydrogen Day and Hydrogen Week mark a symbolic opportunity to celebrate hydrogen—clean hydrogen, specifically—and the crucial role this element plays in supporting a robust, equitable clean energy future for all Americans.”
The week marks the acknowledgment of clean hydrogen and the launch of the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap. Key facts about hydrogen in the U.S. include its production of over 10 million metric tons annually, its essential role in industries like petroleum refining and food processing, and its increasing use in transportation, with more than 70,000 hydrogen-powered forklifts. The national goal is to produce 10 million metric tons per year of clean hydrogen by 2030, aiming for 50 million metric tons by 2050. Activities for Hydrogen Week include walks, runs, social media engagement with #H2DayWalk or #H2DayRun, learning hydrogen facts, exploring DOE resources, and following the FIRST Global’s Hydrogen Horizons Challenge in Singapore. The U.S. government is making substantial investments through the Hydrogen Interagency Task Force (HIT) to advance clean hydrogen technologies, address safety and environmental concerns, and ensure equitable benefits for all communities.
