Five school bus suppliers showcased advancements in electrification and related technologies at the Green Bus Summit during STN EXPO Indy.
Blue Bird
Stephen Whaley of Blue Bird discussed the company’s evolution, noting that 60% of their buses are now non-diesel. Their Clean Bus Solutions program, a joint venture with Generate Capital, offers districts a holistic approach to electrification, providing buses, charging infrastructure, and support for a single monthly payment.
IC Bus
A.J. Palmisano from IC Bus emphasized the unique challenges of EV charging for school buses, advising overnight charging to avoid peak times. He highlighted the importance of interoperability, and the potential for revenue generation through vehicle-to-grid technology.
GreenPower Motor
Brendan Riley of GreenPower Motor detailed the safety and durability of their Type D BEAST and Type A Nano BEAST buses, which exceed safety standards and feature sustainable battery solutions. He noted that while initial costs are significant, battery life can extend up to 20 years.
Cummins
Ryan Vaughn of Cummins discussed their broad range of energy options, including cleaner diesel and future hydrogen solutions. Kelly Samons covered microgrid solutions for fleet charging to address utility outages and rising energy consumption.
Geotab
Craig Berndt of Geotab and other industry leaders showcased how AI and telematics can enhance student safety, bus maintenance, and operational efficiency. They emphasized the importance of integrated technology and data-driven decision-making.
The summit concluded with a Ride & Drive Experience, allowing attendees to test clean school buses firsthand.
