Indiana may soon be the home to the nation’s first stretch of road that can charge EVs while they are still in motion.
Engineers from Purdue University have recently partnered with the Indiana Department of Transportation and Cummins, Inc. to enhance a portion of US 231 and US 52 in West Lafayette. The goal is to establish a quarter-mile stretch of highway that can wirelessly charge EVs without requiring them to cease traveling.
John Kresse, Cummins’ director of hybrid and electric technologies, said they have been analyzing how to improve battery electric trucks.
“This is an opportunity to investigate that technology,” he said.
Construction began in April, and Cummins plans to test the heavy-duty truck at some point in 2025 with the hope of completing the electrified roadway in four to five years.
