NGVAmerica states that natural gas is a bountiful and naturally occurring substance primarily composed of methane, with one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. It stands out as a clean alternative to traditional transportation fuels. Unlike gasoline and diesel, which undergo refining, natural gas requires no such process, minimizing energy expenditure and emissions. With an octane rating of approximately 130, natural gas proves cost-effective and low-emission, offering increased engine compression and combustion efficiency. The United States, the world’s leading natural gas producer, boasts an abundant supply, with recovery occurring in 33 states. Compressed natural gas (CNG), stored at high pressure, is lighter than air, safer than traditional fuels, and widely used in transportation. As the percentage of natural gas used in transportation continues to increase, we want to highlight some of the natural gas trailblazers located in Indiana. Indianapolis is home to the 2021 Greater Indiana Alternative Fuel Leader in CNG KAKCO, and Midwest Clean Fuel provides natural gas needs to those in Lafayette.
