Hyped Up for Hydrogen

Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan are set to receive $1 billion in funding for the Midwest Hydrogen Hub, a crucial initiative to secure the future of local industry while addressing global climate goals. The U.S. Department of Energy will support the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen (MachH2) hub, focusing on diverse hydrogen production sources. This hydrogen will be utilized at local steel mills to reduce carbon emissions, marking a significant step in transforming steel production. The MachH2 hub is expected to create over 13,600 jobs, generate hydrogen for various sectors, and contribute to reducing 25 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

To complement this boost in hydrogen research and usage, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions is embarking on the construction of a 1,000-square-foot hydrogen testing lab in Fort Wayne, Indiana, slated for completion in Q1 2024. The facility aligns with Trelleborg’s strategic objective to lead in hydrogen sealing and testing, catering to the entire hydrogen value chain. The lab will offer hydrogen leak detection, compatibility, dynamic, and permeation testing, which is crucial for hydrogen sealing. Testing capabilities will include pressures up to 15,000 PSI/1,034 bar and cover temperatures from cryogenic to above 350 °F/180 °C. Trelleborg aims to address the unique challenges of hydrogen applications and support diverse sealing demands with its hydrogen-specific test regime. The initiative complements Trelleborg’s H2Pro range of sealing materials designed for various hydrogen applications.
