The Grid Deployment Office, in line with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is managing the $10.5 billion Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program. This initiative aims to enhance grid flexibility and bolster the resilience of the power system in the face of increasing threats from extreme weather and climate change. These programs are designed to expedite the deployment of transformative projects, ensuring the reliability of the power sector’s infrastructure. The goal is to provide all American communities with access to affordable, reliable, and clean electricity anytime and anywhere.
In its first funding opportunity, announced on October 18, 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy allocated up to $3.46 billion in GRIP Program investments for 58 projects spanning 44 states. These projects are intended to strengthen the resilience and reliability of the electric grid across the nation. American Electric Power (AEP) Service Corporation was awarded $27,849,763 for their AEP Advance Distribution Management System and Distributed Energy Resource Management System (ADMS & DERMS) Initiative.
AEP’s initiative involves implementing Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) software along with an operational Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) module. The goal is to enhance grid visibility and management of AEP’s distribution capabilities across its service territory spanning 11 states, including our friends at Indiana Michigan Power. The project encompasses various functions, such as fault location isolation service restoration (FLISR) and distribution operations training simulators (DOTS) for distribution management and grid optimization. Additionally, the initiative involves deploying a DERMS to administer, monitor, and control distributed energy resources (DER) to improve grid reliability, efficiency, and overall performance.
