The City of Evansville is addressing the impacts of climate change by establishing the Evansville Climate Collaborative (ECC), an overhauled department with a new name and mission. Lauren Norvell, the city’s climate action director, highlighted the various ways locals have been affected, including excessive heat, intense storms, flooding, and poor air quality due to wildfire smoke. The ECC, replacing the Environmental Protection Agency, takes a proactive, collaborative approach outlined in the 2021 Evansville Climate Action Plan. Goals include cutting greenhouse emissions by half by 2050, installing solar panels on city buildings, electrifying the city’s fleet, and incentivizing climate-friendly actions by residents. The ECC collaborates with local, state, and regional partners to achieve these objectives while seeking external funding to alleviate taxpayer burden.
