First Student, a Cincinnati-based company, will provide Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) with electric school buses following a $3.9 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This funding, part of the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program, enables the purchase of 10 electric buses and charging infrastructure, marking a significant step toward cleaner and quieter student transportation. The initiative aims to deploy over 370 electric school buses in school districts nationwide, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible education system. The transition to electric buses is expected to enhance the well-being of students and reduce emissions.
“First Student is proud to usher in the transition to electric buses with our partner Indianapolis Public Schools to provide quieter, healthier, and safer rides for students,” said Kevin Matthews, First Student’s Head of Electrification, in a release. “Together, we’ve been able to secure funding for ten emission-free buses and chargers for Indianapolis students, providing them better learning experiences and healthier futures. We look forward to continuing this partnership with IPS to ensure every student starts the day ready to learn.”
