In March of 2023, Cummins launched Accelera by Cummins. The new brand focuses on accelerating the transition to sustainable energy solutions for commercial applications, and it recently revealed the new hydrogen-powered emergency vehicle at the U.S. Department of Energy. The research behind the H2Rescue vehicle began with a government grant awarded to Cummins in September 2020. The project grew into an interagency collaboration to advance hydrogen fuel and includes the U.S. DOE, the U.S. Army Ground Vehicle System Center, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The H2Rescue can act as a communications center and complete a 180-mile round trip to disaster sites to provide supplies, power, heat, and water. The vehicle has an Accelera 90-kilowatt fuel cell engine and a 250-kW traction motor. It carries 175 kilograms of onboard molecular hydrogen and can power up to 25 emergency trailers for three days.
‘”Today is an exciting milestone for Accelera as we wrap up this vehicle roadshow demonstrating the applicability of hydrogen technology for emergency vehicle applications,” said Alison Trueblood, general manager of hydrogen at Accelera. “We are excited to demonstrate that this technology really can apply in a broad range of applications.”‘
