As Fort Wayne Public Transportation Corporation (CITILINK) continues to focus on providing community value through sustainable transportation options, it also looks toward improving the safety and reliability of its facilities. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded nearly $1.7 billion from President Biden’s Infrastructure law to 130 projects. Citilink will receive $1,280,000 in federal discretionary funds from the Bus and Bus Facilities program. FTA announced 130 awards totaling nearly $1.7 billion from President Biden’s Infrastructure law.
“General Manager/CEO John Metzinger said he is proud of Citilink’s team for preparing a competitive application and grateful for letters of support from Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, New Haven Mayor Steven McMichael, Greater Fort Wayne, and Northeast Allen County Regional Coordinating Council (NIRCC). He also expressed thanks to Congressman Jim Banks and Senator Todd Young for supporting Citilink’s application.”
With the additional $400,000 in CARES Act funds already awarded to Citilink and $320,000 in local matching funds, Citilink will plan to complete two projects by the Summer of 2024. The first project is to replace the 39-year-old roof on the vehicle storage facility, followed by replacing the nearly 40-year-old underground biodiesel and gasoline storage tanks with new above-ground fuel storage systems. Though Citilink is studying alternatives to transition to low and zero-emission fuel systems in the future, they expect biodiesel and gasoline buses to be used for the next 15 years.
