“There are two absolutely huge battery factory projects underway in Indiana currently, one in Kokomo that totals over $2.5 billion and another in Terre Haute that will cost about $1.5 billion. Each one of these factories will eventually be producing batteries or components of batteries for the electric vehicle market. In total, the companies behind these facilities project to employ as many as 2,042 Hoosiers directly and have already spurred additional investments by other companies who plan to locate their operations nearby.”
The $2.5 billion gigafactory in Kokomo is made possible through a partnership between Stellantis N.V., an automotive manufacturer formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, and Samsung SDI, a South Korean manufacturer of batteries and other electronic materials. The targeted production time for this factory is 2025, and the facility began construction in March of 2023. Stellantis also announced it will invest $155 million across Indiana Transmission, Kokomo Transmission, and Kokomo Casting plants to produce new electric drive modules (EDM) and retain more than 265 jobs.
Oregon-based ENTEK announced its most significant investment when it released plans to invest $1.5 billion in a new Terre Haute production facility. As the only U.S.-owned producer of ‘wet-process’ lithium-ion battery separator materials, the new facility in Terre Haute will create up to 642 new, high-wage jobs by the end of 2027. “The new campus was fueled in part by a $200 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Officials say the new space in Terre Haute will be capable of supplying approximately 1.4 to 1.6 million EVs annually by 2027.” Construction of this facility is set to begin this year, and an official launch is expected in 2025 – 2027.
