The City of Bloomington and the City of Indianapolis have been recognized as “A List Cities” by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, acknowledging their bold leadership in environmental action and transparency regarding their plans. The designation, received by only 119 cities and counties globally, is based on their progress in curbing carbon emissions through the Carbon Disclosure Project Track.
Bloomington’s Climate Action Plan focuses on carbon reduction objectives, including supporting local food markets to boost the city’s economy and reduce waste. Indianapolis earned the ranking in part due to its significant efforts in tree planting, recognizing the importance of trees in lowering surface temperatures and purifying air. The city collaborates strategically with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful to plant trees in historically underserved areas. Indianapolis has previously received an ‘A’ rating five times, highlighting its consistent commitment to environmental sustainability.
Morgan Mickelson, Greater Indiana Board Member and Director of the Office of Sustainability for the City of Indianapolis, said, “…since 2018, more than 31,000 trees have been planted in public spaces – and that’s just a start…I also want to caution everyone that the work is not done… We’re in the climate crisis. I would just encourage everyone to take the time to reflect on all the hard work that is being done, but to also not forget that we have a lot more work ahead.”
The Greater Indiana team congratulates our members for their dedicated efforts in curbing carbon emissions and contributing to global environmental initiatives. The team acknowledges the cities’ commitment to sustainability and looks forward to continued collaboration in advancing environmental goals.
