In 1904, Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau founded the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis, later named the American Lung Association (Lung Association), pioneering an education, advocacy, and research model. Celebrating its 120th anniversary in 2024, the Lung Association has a rich history, contributing to public health achievements, reducing smoking rates, advocating for clean air policies, and funding crucial research. Today, the organization has positioned itself as the Trusted Champion for lung health, focusing on defeating lung cancer, creating a tobacco-free future, championing clean air for all, and improving the quality of life for those living with lung disease. The Lung Association’s new interactive timeline highlights its impact over the years, showcasing initiatives like LUNG FORCE and State of the Air.
In 2022, the Greater Indiana team collaborated with the Lung Association on the development of Biobased Academy®, an online training program for fleet professionals and technicians. Sponsored by the United Soybean Board, the program educates participants on the benefits of biobased fleet, facilities, and grounds products, emphasizing the operational, health, safety, and environmental advantages. The Lung Association is currently offering a Biobased Certified Fleet Professional (BCFP)SM course with plans to launch a Biobased Certified Facilities and Property Professional (BCPP)SM course in February. The BCFP and BCPP courses are designed to equip participants with knowledge of biobased products and the potential health, safety, renewability, and reliability benefits associated with transitioning away from petroleum-based counterparts — supporting the Lung Association’s work to champion clean air and a healthy environment.
The Greater Indiana team would like to extend our warmest congratulations to the American Lung Association on reaching a remarkable milestone. As the oldest voluntary health organization in the United States and a valued strategic partner for Greater Indiana, the Lung Association’s commitment to clean air initiatives aligns communities across Indiana and the nation, and we look forward to our collaborative efforts in 2024. Here’s to another 120 years of impactful contributions to lung health and cleaner air.
