EPA introduces Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Grant Program

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, has unveiled a nearly $1 billion initiative to replace polluting heavy-duty vehicles with zero-emission alternatives.

Funded through the Inflation Reduction Act, the Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Grant Program aims to cut climate and air pollution, support good-paying jobs, and improve air quality nationwide.

The program targets Class 6 and 7 vehicles, including school buses and utility trucks, with funds for vehicle replacements, fueling infrastructure, and workforce training.

As part of Biden’s environmental justice commitments and the Justice40 Initiative, the program ensures that 40% of benefits are dedicated to disadvantaged communities.

The program also features two sub-programs: the School Bus Sub-Program and the Vocational Vehicles Sub-Program. Eligible applicants include states, municipalities, Indian tribes, territories, and nonprofit school transportation associations, with at least $400 million earmarked for communities facing significant pollution.

Applications are open until July 25, 2024, with awards expected by the conclusion of 2024.
