Greater Indiana Clean Cities Meets With Congress

February 21, 2020 – Greater Indiana Clean Cities’ Executive Director, Kerri Garvin, joined clean transportation leaders from across the nation in Washington, D.C. to educate federal policy makers about the need to expand America’s use of alternative fuels, including biofuels, electricity, natural gas, and propane autogas. The Director and stakeholders participated in the Energy Independence Summit 2020, the nation’s premier clean transportation policy event from February 10 – February 12.

The Energy Independence Summit is an annual event held Washington, D.C. This three-day event hosts speakers and panels in a number of informational sessions, brings in federal agency experts, and allows Clean Cities coalitions to network and discuss best practices in the alternative transportation fuel policy sphere.  The highlight of the event is an education and outreach day where coalitions and partners meet with congressional offices to discuss transportation issues.  This year, Greater Indiana was delighted to be joined by a representative from the National Biodiesel Board.

“It is our role as a Clean Cities Coalition serving Indiana to help promote, support and assist our stakeholders with their missions, building more awareness and investment in alternative fuel transportation,” stated Garvin. “Our meetings with Indiana elected officials were positive, leading to an opportunity to share our message that expanding the use of alternative fuels supports our local economy and many Hoosier jobs, resulting in cleaner air for everyone.”

Greater Indiana met with nine Indiana Congressional offices, including Senator Young and Senator Braun. Discussed in these meetings were specific vehicle and infrastructure projects happening across Indiana. Building relationships with Indiana’s elected officials is important to Greater Indiana Clean Cities and its Board of Directors. Increasing communication and outreach through events, such as the Energy Independence Summit, results in more favorable decisions for alternative fuels made at the federal level. Greater Indiana looks forward to participating in the event with its stakeholders next year.
