DATED: March 25, 2014

Dear Propane Retailer:

As of Jan. 1, 2014, anyone who wants to sell alternative fuel in Indiana must be licensed by the state as a propane dealer before dispensing alternative fuel into a motor vehicle (HEA 1180, Sec 9).

As a retailer of alternative fuel (commonly or commercially known or sold as butane or propane), you must register as a propane dealer. To do so, complete the application for a Propane Dealers License (Form PDL-1). This form is enclosed for your convenience. You also can find it at Please return the completed application with a fee of $50 as soon as possible, but no later than April 1, 2014. Mail it to the following address:

Indiana Department of Revenue
Fuel Tax, Bonds, and Licensing Section
P.O. Box 6114
Indianapolis, IN 46206-6114

Once registered, you can begin dispensing alternative fuel into a motor vehicle. You must ensure that the motor vehicle into which you are dispensing the alternative fuel has a current Indiana Alternative Fuel Decal affixed to it or a current 72-Hour Alternative Fuel Trip Permit assigned to it (IC 6-6-14). Failure to do so can result in your Propane Dealers License being revoked.

For more information on selling 72-Hour Alternative Fuel Trip Permits at your location or the Propane Dealers License, please call our customer service line at (317) 615-2630 Monday through Friday 8:15 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
